Questions to ask at a specialist appointment

A consultation works best as a conversation. You do not need perfect medical language; a few practical questions can help you leave with a clearer plan.

Consultation at the practice

Before you arrive

Write down your main concern in one sentence and note when it started. Include what makes it better or worse, how often it happens and how it affects daily life.

Bring previous test results if you have them, a current medication list and the names of relevant conditions or surgeries.

Questions that can clarify the plan

  • What could be causing these symptoms?
  • Which tests do I need, and what will each test help us understand?
  • What are my treatment options, including monitoring?
  • What should I expect during recovery or follow-up?
  • Which symptoms should prompt me to contact the practice sooner?

Ask for a simpler explanation

Good care includes time to understand your options. Ask your specialist to explain unfamiliar terms, write down key instructions or repeat anything that still feels unclear.

A useful next step

The most useful question is the one that helps you make a decision with confidence. Bring a note on your phone or a trusted person if that helps.
